The good news is that Trimble still offers this version in an official capacity, although it's no longer receiving updates. The last version of SketchUp Make was released in 2017. When Trimble acquired SketchUp, it forked the product into several tiers, keeping the free desktop version around as "SketchUp Make." ![]() The SketchUp web app is decent and might be good enough for many people, but for a long time, the desktop version was completely free, too. If you want the latest full desktop app, you're looking at $300 a year for personal use. At the time of this writing, the only modern free version of SketchUp is a web app. SketchUp has changed hands a few times over the years, once having been owned by Google, and currently owned by a company called Trimble. Trimble even warns it might have security problems as it hasn't been updated since 2017. However, as of May 2022, the official SketchUp website is no longer offering the free version (SketchUp Make 2017) for download. This worked when we published it in 2021.

![]() started a trend of younger guys that were in to Rockabilly music, dressed in a 1950s Greaser style, and built period correct pre war hot rods, reminiscent of the 1940s, 50's, and early 60s. Anthony stated that to him and his car club, their traditional hot rods were lacking certain elements like paint and/or upholstery, and were similar to rat bikes of their time period, thus the name Rat Rods. In the early 1990s, Anthony Casteneda thought of the word when they were interviewed in a Rod & Custom magazine article. The origin of the term "rat rod" is the subject of dispute, but was definitely coined by one specific person in the Shifters So. Due to the beater's cheap upholstery, primer covering (instead of paint), and lack of chrome or polished metals, it has been considered a progenitor of the rat rod. The December 1972 issue of Rod & Custom Magazine was dedicated to the "beater", a low-budget alternative to the early car models that were slick and customized. Origins 1932 Ford coupe rat rod in Sheffield, Vermont. ![]() Few cars in the '50s looked like this, but today they can, in countless creative and fun ways. The customs can have slit windows and scrape the ground. ![]() with giant rear tires, lots of carburetors, open pipes, and tall gearshifts. They're artistic, fun, and sensational reinterpretations of late-'40s/early-'50s hot rodding as a culture that includes music, clothing, hairstyles, and tattoos. Second are what I personally call Rat Rods, as a positive term. Those are cars built the way rods were built in the '30s, '40s, and early '50s, with a primary emphasis on low-buck and home-built, using period-correct components ranging from flathead to nailhead engines, wide whitewall tires to skinny blackwall bias-plies, and black primer to hand-rubbed paint. I see what are referred to as Rat Rods today comprising three elements: First are the traditional rods and customs. Rodding scribe Pat Ganahl took a broad look at the rat rod trend and had this to say: Recently, using the term "rat rod" has been derided as being incorrect when describing any vehicle that appears unfinished or is built simply to be driven. The owner of the vehicle was typically responsible for most, or all, of the work present in the vehicle. Later-era post-war vehicles were rarely constructed without fenders and were often customized in the fashion of kustoms, leadsleds, and lowriders Maltese crosses, skulls, and other accessories were often added. The bodies are frequently channeled over the frame and sectioned, or the roofs are chopped, for a lower profile. Many early (pre- World War II) vehicles were not built with fenders, hoods, running boards, and bumpers. The typical rat rod is a late-1920s through to late-1950s coupe or roadster, but sometimes a truck or sedan. Biker, greaser, rockabilly, psychobilly, and punk sub-cultures are often cited as influences that shaped rat rodding. Rat rods are meant to loosely imitate, in both form and function, the "traditional" hot rods of the era. The rat rod's inception signified a throwback to the hot rods of the earlier days of hot-rod culture-built according to the owner's abilities and with the intention of being driven. Originally, rat rods were a counter-reaction to the high-priced "customs" and typical hot rods, many of which were seldom driven and served only a decorative purpose. The term has also been applied to a style of hot rod or custom car that broadly imitates or exaggerates the early hot rods of the mid-twentieth century, unlike the "traditional" hot rod, which is one built at that time or a close re-creation of one of such. ![]() Whether or not so appointed, the rat rod uniquely conveys its builder’s imagination. Upon receiving this signal, the dash cam immediately 'locks' the current footage, preventing it from being overwritten. The G-Sensor detects this sharp change and reacts by sending a signal to the dash cam. However, when there's a sudden change in movement - such as swerving, braking hard, or colliding with another vehicle or object - the G-forces change significantly. When the vehicle is moving normally, the forces acting on it are relatively constant, and the G-Sensor remains inactive. These changes cause shifts in 'G-forces,' which the sensor can detect. In simple terms, acceleration is any change in velocity - whether speeding up, slowing down, or changing direction. The G-Sensor in a dash cam operates based on the principles of acceleration. Overall, a G-Sensor dash cam offers drivers a smart and automated way to document crucial events that traditional dash cams might miss or overwrite. With a G-Sensor dash cam, drivers can enjoy greater peace of mind, knowing that significant events on the road or during parking will be automatically detected and recorded. Video footage locked and stored due to the G-Sensor's activation can serve as valuable evidence for insurance claims, providing a detailed record of events leading up to and following a collision. Any impact, like someone hitting your parked car, will trigger the dash cam to start recording, capturing the event even in your absence. When the vehicle is parked, the G-Sensor remains active. This feature provides crucial video evidence in the event of an accident, hit-and-run, or other incidents. The G-Sensor detects sudden changes in motion or an impact, automatically triggering the dash cam to save the ongoing recording. Benefits of a G-Sensor Dash CamĪ G-Sensor dash cam brings several key benefits to the table, enhancing overall road safety and security: Automatic Incident Detection and Recording In essence, a G-Sensor dash cam offers an additional layer of protection by automatically securing crucial video footage during unexpected or significant events on the road. This locked file is then stored separately and is not overwritten when the storage is full, ensuring that critical footage is preserved for future review or as potential evidence. ![]() ![]() When the G-Sensor perceives a significant force, it triggers the dash cam to 'lock' the current video file. The G-Sensor's primary function in a dash cam is to detect incidents automatically. These forces could be due to sudden changes in direction, braking, or impact, such as during a collision. This sensor measures forces of acceleration, or 'G-forces', that act upon the vehicle. What is a G-Sensor Dash Cam?Ī G-Sensor dash cam, also known as a gravity sensor dash cam, is a specialized type of dash cam equipped with an accelerometer. Let's dive deeper into the workings, benefits, and considerations when choosing a G-Sensor dash cam. This intelligent feature can significantly enhance road safety and provide robust evidence when needed. One feature that sets modern dash cams apart is the G-Sensor technology. Everything what is needed is "just" a little firmware and software optimization/update.In an increasingly tech-driven world, dash cams have evolved far beyond simple recording devices. And do you know what is pissing me of most? These are just software things. I'm happy with the camera, but there are too many of these stupid little things (I can write dozens of them), which are ruin the whole user experience of Thinkware cams. If I need to manually make a longer recording I need to push the button every minute, what is not ideal when I'm talking to the police officer. But when the manual recording is ending, there is no alert about that. I pressed the button, so a silent and short beep is enough as feedback. The very loud "manual recording started" messages on the footages are also very annoying. Only things what I need to know by word, is the number of recorded parking incidents when I starting the car, with a minimum 5 minutes long recording on the SD card, and information about problems with the SD card. It's logical that the GPS will lost the signal in garages or tunnels, and then when I get out from them, the signal will be detected. I also don't need to know about GPS status. Two short beeps for continuous recording started, and one short for parking mode is enough for me. But I don't need the jingle, or talks from the camera. The beeps are very annoying, but I can't turn them off, because I wanna know that the cams working. The problem is, I live in Slovakia, and the roads here are in bad condition, so the camera is always beeping, because it is detecting shocks. |
